al-Mustafa Institute

The al-Mustafa Institute for Culture, Human Sciences and Islamic Studies in Berlin was founded as a gGmbH in June 2016 and offers a degree in Islamic Theology ( BA ) in cooperation with the International al-Mustafa University in Qom . In addition, it is dedicated to the promotion of academic Islamic studies in German-speaking countries. For this purpose, books are written or translated into German in cooperation with German-speaking scientists. The al-Mustafa Institute is also pursuing the plan to publish a scientific magazine on the subject of Islamic studies in continuous periods.

The bachelor's degree in Islamic Theology at the al-Mustafa Institute deals scientifically with the Islamic religion, taking into account an Islamic-Shiite understanding. The institute is an associated (non-voting) member of the Islamic Community of Shiite Communities in Germany (IGS).

According to the institute's own statement, it is “an independent and independent scientific institution that acts at its own discretion and on the basis of the German Basic Law and not on the instructions of any other state” and it works according to its own scientific guidelines. The agency agreement between the al-Mustafa International University in Qom and the al-Mustafa Institute guarantees the independence of the Berlin institute. For the bachelor's degree in "Islamic Theology", the curriculum from al-Mustafa International University had been adopted as the basis for scientific and theological reasons. At the same time, however, around 30% of the curriculum has been adapted to German conditions and the prevailing scientific conditions. In the curriculum of the al-Mustafa Institute, in addition to the classical Islamic courses, subjects such as Jewish theology, Christian theology and comparative theology can be found. The independence of the al-Mustafa Institute is, however, questioned by independent media. Since March 2017 the “alMustafa Institute” has been an official branch of the alMustafa University. The al-Mustafa Institute stated that the Senate Department for Home Affairs and Sport had refuted all allegations against the institute.

Controversial workshop

At the end of July 2017, the IGS held a workshop at the al-Mustafa Institute in Berlin on the subject of "Understanding Islam between rationality and radicality - historical-theological backgrounds and social challenges". Broad social and journalistic criticism turned against this. The Federal Ministry of Family Affairs then publicly withdrew its funding commitment. The IGS and the al-Mustafa Institute protested against the allegations of being “terrorist workers” and being networked with the Iranian government. Dawood Nazirizadeh, a board member of the IGS, denied any link to extremism. Despite the previous criticism, the workshop took place with the participation of all invited speakers, including Hamideh Mohagheghi . The head of the institute, Esfahani, said he wanted to clarify "how falsifications of the Islamic message lead to young people carrying out acts of terrorism today". In addition, a “German-Islamic identity” should be developed. A speaker at the workshop, Sedigheh Mousavi, accused the media of being biased. The Bundestag is also concerned with the background to the seminar. The results of the workshop were published by the IGS, the al-Mustafa Institute published a report on the contents of the workshop and a thesis paper. The al-Mustafa Institute publishes video recordings of the workshop lectures on its YouTube channel.

The International al-Mustafa University offers 150 subject areas, including the basics of Islamic worldviews, exegesis of the Koran , Islamic ethics , logic , Islamic philosophy , principles of Islamic law and Islamic mysticism.
