The Islamic Community of Shiite Communities in Germany (IGS) is an umbrella organization of over 150 Shiite mosque communities that was founded in Hamburg in 2009 . Its seat is formally in Berlin , the chairman Hodschatoleslam Mahmood Khalilzadeh has his office in Frankfurt am Main .

Foundation and goals

On the initiative of the Islamic Center Hamburg (IZH), the "Islamic Community of Shiite Congregations in Germany eV" (IGS), based in Berlin, was founded by 110 Shiite congregations in Germany. Its first chairman was Ayatollah Ghaemmaghami . The association wants to promote Islamic unity within the denominations and in particular communication between Sunni and Alevi organizations. The scholarly council is of the opinion "that an independent Islam should develop in Europe".

The declared goals of the IGS include:

".. the promotion and training of religious and cultural activities within the framework of the European social order and its applicable and existing laws (...), the endeavor to create understanding between Muslims and European society and the prevention of parallel societies as well as communication and Dialogue with the representatives of the other religions, especially the Christian and Jewish institutions, as members of a large religious family. "

The current chairman is Hodschatoleslam Mahmood Khalilzadeh. The IGS has four regional or country representatives (IGS-Nord, IGS-Ost, IGS-Mitte and IGS-West) under itself and organizes its work for the Shiite communities. According to the association, the Shiite congregations in Germany “are composed mainly of Turkish , Afghan , Iranian , Lebanese , Iraqi and Pakistani congregation members”.

The IGS has been a participant in the German Islam Conference since 2014 .

activities

The IGS sees itself as a service provider for the communities with a commitment to the Zwölfer-Schia in Germany , which they network with each other, and also as a representation of interests for the same externally. She acts as a contact for society and its institutions. It uses press releases to take a stance on social, domestic and foreign affairs.

The IGS also gained more public attention, especially through the annual Ghadīr Chumm festival , which has already taken place twice in Mainz. Up to 1000 visitors took part in the festivities that were held in honor of the appointment of Ali ibn Abi Talib as the successor of the Prophet Mohammed by him at Ghadir Chumm in 632 AD / 10 AH. The Iftar reception, held for the second time, is also one of the major IGS events. The guest of honor in 2015 was the President of the Bundestag Norbert Lammert . In the previous year, this was Aydan Özoguz (SPD). Other personalities from politics and religious communities were also guests.

On April 30, 2018, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier received representatives of the IGS for a discussion, which the Federal President's Office classified as part of Steinmeier's discussions with various religious communities. Iranian regime critics, including the Stop the Bomb initiative , criticized the visit.

criticism

Since the IGS was founded by the IZH, which is monitored by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution and is supposed to exert significant influence on the association, it is particularly criticized on the question of participation in extremist positions.

In July 2017, the IGS criticized marriage for everyone and verbally attacked the Ibn Rushd Goethe mosque in this context .

At the end of July 2017, the IGS held a workshop on the subject of "Understanding Islam between rationality and radicality - historical-theological backgrounds and social challenges" at the Al-Mustafa Institute in Berlin, against which criticism was raised. The Federal Ministry of Family Affairs then publicly withdrew its funding commitment. The IGS protested against the allegation expressed by the Bild newspaper that it would support terrorist organizations. IGS board member Dawood Nazirizadeh denied any connection to extremism. The work results of the workshop were published by the IGS. The lectures of the workshop were published on YouTube in the Al-Mustafa Institute's own channel.

Since the IGS does not comment on the al-Quds day and the IGS board member Hudschat-ul-Islam Muhammad Mohsen took part in it in 2018, the former religious policy spokesman for Alliance 90 / The Greens , Volker Beck , asked the association for funds for the prevention of extremism delete them and remove them from the advisory board of the Institute for Islamic Theology at Humboldt University . Despite a lawsuit by the student council against the decision to found the institute, the institution started its work in 2019.
