Stop the bomb

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stop the Bomb (STB) is a non-partisan initiative that campaigns with prominent support against doing business with the Iranian regime and for the support of the secular, constitutional and democratic opposition in Iran. The initiative went public in Austria in December 2007 and is supported there by the association “MEDEA - Middle East Democracy Alliance / Alliance for Democracy in the Middle East”. The alliance has also existed in Germany since October 2008, where it is supported by the “Mideast Freedom Forum” association. In addition to the regime's terror against its own people, Stop the Bomb is primarily concerned with the threat to Israel and the West posed by the Iranian regime and the Iranian nuclear program .

petition

A central instrument of the campaign is a petition, the Austrian version of which has been signed by over 5,400 people from all over the world. More than 4900 individuals have so far signed the German petition. The petitions warn of Iran's nuclear armament plans and demand from German and Austrian companies to cease their business relations with the state. In addition, the initiative criticizes the situation in Iran itself: “In Iran, protests by students and trade unions are systematically crushed, women are brutally oppressed, national and religious minorities, gays and lesbians and opponents of the regime are persecuted. Executions and torture, including those of minors, are the order of the day, arbitrary state decisions, poverty and corruption are omnipresent. "

The initiative demands that the German and Austrian federal governments adopt sanctions against Iran, support the Iranian opposition and ban Hezbollah domestically.

Prominent supporters of the petitions are:

Controversy

On March 9, 2005, a group of members of the Trotskyist group Arbeiterstandpunkt disrupted an event of the Stop-the-Bomb campaign in the Viennese cultural center Café 7stern. A visitor, Mary Kreutzer , was physically attacked and injured by Michael Pröbsting, one of the group's spokesmen at the time. In March of the following year, he was convicted of assault.

At a conference of the initiative in Vienna in 2008, the historian Benny Morris described a preventive strike against the Iranian nuclear program, including with non-conventional weapons, as necessary. Furthermore, an employee of the official news agency of the Iranian regime IRNA had been denied access to the event.

Fabian Köhler accused Stop the Bomb 2012 in Neues Deutschland of warmongering and Islamophobia. The organization allegedly harassed and defamed people and organizations that do business with Iran outside of nuclear or military concerns. Stop the Bomb rejects these allegations.
