Henry III. from Oldenburg-Wildeshausen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Henry III. von Oldenburg (* before 1197 ; † May 27, 1234 near Altenesch ) was Count von Wildeshausen from 1197 and Count von Bruchhausen from 1227/28 or 1229 . He came from the Wildeshausener branch of the House of Oldenburg .

Life

His parents were Heinrich II. Von Oldenburg-Wildeshausen and Beatrix Countess von Loccum-Hallermund. Henry III. briefly succeeded as Count von Wildeshausen until he gave his brother Burchard a share of the rulership rights in 1199 . The rule was not officially divided. Both brothers emphasized the independence of their line and swapped the Ammer bars of the Oldenburg counts in their coat of arms for the independent symbol of the three Hallermund roses .

In 1229 Heinrich left the Wildeshausen Castle and thus the Wildeshauser Vogtei to the Archbishop of Bremen Gerhard II. In order to receive them back as a fiefdom - also in the name of the absent Burchard, but probably on his own initiative . This was preceded by a conflict with the Oldenburg line of the Grafenhaus around Wildeshausen and the Leuchtenburg near Hatten , which the Archbishop decided as arbitrator . The feudal mandate opened the archbishopric in 1270 to the hope that Wildeshausen would later fall back , but in the situation of 1229 initially secured the Wildeshausen brothers their right of ownership over Oldenburg. It is possible that both of them or Heinrich alone were enfeoffed with the Grafschaft Bruchhausen by Gerhard II as early as 1227/28. Presumably that was the decisive motive of the brothers for the feudal commissioning of Wildeshausen.

In May 1234 Heinrich III. Participants in the decisive Gerhard II. Initiated a crusade against the heretics applicable Stedinger .

In this war in 1233 his brother Burchard was killed. Heinrich was also slain by them in the battle of Altenesch on May 27, 1234.

Wilbrand , another brother of Heinrich, was bishop of Paderborn and Utrecht.

heritage

After his death, Heinrich's inheritance was shared again between his two sons. His son Heinrich V († 1270) became Count of Neu-Bruchhausen , his second son, Ludolf († around 1278) received Alt-Bruchhausen. The line of the Counts of Neu-Bruchhausen went out with the death of Heinrich V's son Gerhard I around 1310. The line of the Counts of Alt-Bruchhausen went out with Otto († after 1298).

Marriage and children

He married Ermtrud (also Ermintrudis) von Schoten-Breda (de Schodis), daughter of Count Heinrich II. Von Breda. Heinrich's brother Burchard was married to Ermtrud's sister, Kunigunde. The marriage resulted in the following children:

  • Heinrich V (attested 1232; † around 1270) ∞ Irmgard von Hoya
  • Burchard († around 1262) became Canon of Verden
  • Ludolf († around 1278) ∞ Hedwig von Wölpe
  • Sophie
