Imam Ali Mosque

The Imam Ali Mosque was built in the tradition of the building of the same name in Iraq as the fourth oldest mosque in Germany 1960-1965 in Hamburg on the Outer Alster ( Uhlenhorst ). The foundation stone was laid on February 13, 1960, the inauguration in 1963 and 1965. In the initial phase, the construction was financed by Iranian merchants in Hamburg. The land costs amounted to 250,000 DM (1958), while the construction costs amounted to two million marks (1960/65). The foundation was very cost-intensive due to the effort required due to the damp subsoil on the Alster. The mosque with a dome and two minarets is designed in the type of an " Ivan mosque". The client and sponsor of the Shiite mosque is the “Islamic Center Hamburg e. V. "(IZH). The prayer hall can accommodate up to 1,500 people (if all areas are used). The women usually pray in the inner circle of the prayer room (behind the men) and only move to the gallery when there is a large crowd.

Building history of the IZH

In June 1953, Iranian merchants based in Hamburg founded an association for the construction of a mosque in Qom (Iran) after consultation with their spiritual head Grand Ayatollah Hossein Borudscherdi . Together with Hodschatoleslam Mohammad Mohagheghi, who was sent to Hamburg two years later, they initiated the construction of the mosque. At the suggestion of Borudscherdi, business people came together at the same time to form a development association for co-financing. In October 1957, a plot of land in the Uhlenhorst district on the Alster was acquired.

A construction plan was selected from several drafts, which was then carried out by the architects Gottfried Schramm and Jürgen Elingius in collaboration with the Iranian architect Zargarpoor. The foundation stone was laid on February 13, 1960 in the presence of many Muslims, representatives of the city of Hamburg and Hodschatoleslam Mohagheghi.

The shell was completed in May 1963. A million DM had already been spent on the project. After Ayatollah Boroudjerdi's death and Hodschatoleslam Mohagheghi's return to Iran, construction work was temporarily suspended until the office rooms on the upper floor and the office rooms on the upper floor in 1966/67 , with the help of donations from business people from Tehran and Hamburg part of the facade could be completed.

Although the Iranian embassy in Bonn (at that time under the Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi ) had the bank accounts of the mosque blocked, the community managed, with the help of generous private donations, to build the lecture room in the years 1969 to 1979, to complete the facade and with the Expansion of the lower floor to begin.

During the tenure of Hodschatoleslam Moghaddam between 1980 and 1992, the washrooms as well as a kitchen and a dining room were set up in the basement. In addition, the artists A. Meshkat and A. Sadeghian from Mashhad began to decorate the prayer room with tile mosaic, and a simultaneous interpreting system was installed in the lecture room.

In the summer of 1992, under the direction of Hodschatoleslam Mohammad Bagher Ansari, the tile work was completed, including the mihrab (prayer niche), a gift from the Goharschad Mosque in Mashhad . Since the office and study rooms soon proved to be inadequate, the foundation was laid in 1996 for an extension behind the original mosque, which is to contain a library with a dome as well as office space and an underground car park.

Controversy

The IZH is under observation by the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg . In a statement from 2004 it says: “As an extended arm of the Tehran revolutionary leadership, the IZH consistently pursues the goal of spreading Islamist ideas in Germany based on the domestic model and intensifying its influence on the Shiite community, among other things. a. through the establishment of new Islamic centers or the support of corresponding projects as well as through various forms of cooperation with other groups and institutions in Germany and in other European countries. […] The IZH's political orientation is also indicative of its support for Hezbollah supporters living in Hamburg , to whom u. a. Meeting rooms are made available. "

Until 2004, the IZH was a regular co-organizer of the “ Al-Quds Day ”. On “Al-Quds-Day” in September 2010, the IZH gave up its restraint and publicly called for participation and supported the event logistically with transport and food. According to the Protection of the Constitution, the IZH was also involved in the annual Al Quds demonstration in Berlin in 2016.

At the same time, however , a benevolent Islam based on cooperation should be conveyed through public events such as the annual Open Mosque Day and in seminars and lectures to which Western scientists are invited.
