The Goharschad Mosque is an important Persian mosque from the 15th century. It is located in the Iranian city ​​of Mashhad next to the Imam Reza Shrine . According to a Thuluth inscription in the southern Ivan of the building, the same was built in 1418 on the orders of Goharschad , the wife of the Timurid ruler Shah-Ruch . Architect Ghawam ed-Din Schirasi carried out the construction with workers from Isfahan and Shiraz . During the Safavid and Qajar era , the mosque was renovated. In 1911 the ivane and the two-layer dome were badly damaged by Russian bombing . Repairs were made in 1920.

The area of the mosque is 6048 m². It took 12 years to make. It is a classic mosque with a four-iwan courtyard . There are seven large Schabestane and six entrances and exits between the ivans.

Iwane

The four Iwans have the names: Maghssure (southern Iwan), Dar os-Siade (northern Iwan), Etekaf (eastern Iwan) and Sheikh Baha od-Din (western Iwan).

The most important Ivan is the Maghssure with an area of ​​500 m², a length of 37 m and a height of 5.25 m; it is adorned with numerous works of art. Minbar

The minbar of the Maghssure-Ivan, made of walnut and pear wood and decorated with carvings , is known as " Saheb os-Saman ". Its creator is Mohammad Najar Khorassani, an artist from the era of Fath Ali Shah . It was restored in 1946 by Heydar Niknam Golpayegani. It has a height of 7.5 m and 14 stairs.

Dome and minarets

The dome of the mosque is 41 m high and lies on the Maghssure-Ivan. Its outer surface is covered with glazed bricks and a Kufi inscription. On either side of the Maghssure-Ivan rise two minarets with inscriptions and a height of 43 m. The outer circumference of the dome measures 85.61 m. The original dome was removed for technical reasons in 1962 and the current dome was built and decorated with new building materials .
