al-Hasakah
Residents 16,946 (2004)

Al-Qahtaniyya , until 1962 Qbor el-Bid ( Arabic القحطانية, DMG al-Qaḥṭāniyya ; Syriac-Aramaic ܩܒܪ̈ܐ ܚܘܪ̈ܐ Qabre Hewore ; Kurdish Tirbespî ) is an originally Assyrian city in the governorate of al-Hasakah in Syria . Their name was derived from the Aramaic words “Qoreh” (“graves”) and “khworih” (“white”) - together thus “white graves”. The Kurdish name (Tirbe spî) has the same meaning. According to the official Syrian census, al-Qahtaniyah had a population of 16,946 in 2004.

The majority of the population consists of Kurds , but there are also a relevant number of Assyrians / Arameans . Both ethnic groups have lived here since the city was founded in the late 1920s. Al-Qahtaniyya's current name was adopted in 1962 as a more optimistic alternative to the old name Qbor el-Bid / "White Tombs".

On March 13, 2004, during the Qamishli riots , when 40 Kurds were killed, the people of al-Qahtaniyah also protested. Some protesters were injured or killed.

During the Syrian Civil War , the Kurdish People's Defense Units (PYD) took control of the city.

The Assyrian poet and author Tuma Gawriye Nahroyo (1936–2002) comes from al-Qahtaniyya.
