John Coggeshall Junior

John Coggeshall junior (born 1619 in England , † October 1, 1708 in Rhode Island ) was a British politician . He served as Lieutenant Governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations .

Career

John Coggeshall junior, son of Mary, nee Gould or Holmes (1604-1684) and President of the Colony of Rhode Iceland and Providence Plantations John Coggeshall senior (1601-1647), was built during the reign of I. Jacob was born. He grew up in the Village Castle Hedingham in northeast Essex , where his father was a trader. In 1632 the Coggeshall family moved to New England . Among them were his parents and siblings who were still alive next to John. There is no record of the following years. From 1653 he embarked on a public career when he was treasurer of the towns of Portsmouth and Newport . The following year the colony was reunited. The two towns then formed the government with the towns of Providence and Warwick . Coggeshall served as treasurer in the four towns for a year. His name appears on a 1655 Newport Freemen list. For the next 35 years he served almost continuously in one or more roles as Assistant, Treasurer General, Member of Parliament, General Recorder, and Mayor. He was one of ten assistants mentioned in the Royal Charter of 1663 , which formed the basis of the Rhode Island government for nearly two centuries. In 1686 he became Lieutenant Governor under Colonial Governor Walter Clarke . His tenure ended only after a month, however, as the English crown decided that Edmund Andros should become the colonial governor of all colonies of New England under the Dominion of New England . After the fall of the Dominion and the arrest of Andros in 1689, Coggeshall was re-elected lieutenant governor. He held this post under Colonial Governor Henry Bull until May 1690. During the King Philip's War in April 1676, Coggeshall sat on a committee for the manufacture of boats for colonial defense. In the same year, in August 1676, he was a member of a court martial in a trial against several Indians .

He wrote his will in June 1708 and died on October 1, 1708.

Coggeshall was married three times. From these marriages there were 16 children. In 1647 he married his first wife Elizabeth Baulston (1628-1700), daughter of Elizabeth and the magistrate William Baulston (1601-1678). One of their children was John III. (1650-1706). The divorce took place in 1655 by the General Assembly. Elizabeth then married Thomas Gould, while Coggeshall married Patience Throckmorton (1640–1676), daughter of Rebecca Coville and John Throckmorton, in the same year. This marriage resulted in nine children, including Freegift (1659-1728), James (1660-1712), Mary (1662-1699), Patience (1669-1747) and Benjamin (1673-1739). Her last child was born in 1676, the year she died. After her death he married Mary Hedge Sturgis (1649–1731), daughter of William Hedge (1612–1670). From this marriage had four children, including Abraham (1683-1758).
