Joseph Jenckes

Joseph Jenckes III. (* 1656 in Lynn , Massachusetts ; † June 15, 1740 in Pawtucket , Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations ) was a British politician. He was Lieutenant Governor and Colonial Governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.

Career

Joseph Jenckes III., Son of Esther Ballard (1632–1717) and Joseph Jenckes II. (1628–1717), was born during the colonial period. The Jenckes family lived in Lynn, Massachusetts before settling in Rhode Island. About the youth of Joseph Jenckes III. nothing is known. His father, the son of Joan Hearne (1607-1635) and Joseph I. Jenckes (1599-1683), ran a sawmill in Warwick ( Kent County ), before moving to Providence ( Providence County dragged). Joseph Jenckes III. became a Freeman in Providence in 1681 . Ten years later he embarked on a public career. He represented Providence County as a member of the House of Representatives for twelve years between 1691 and 1708, and in four of these years he held the post of speaker there . Between 1707 and 1712 he was mayor of the towns of Providence and Warwick, and assistant of Providence during those years. Jenckes was elected lieutenant governor of the colony in 1715. He held the post every year until 1721 and then between 1722 and 1727, at which time he was elected colonial governor. He then held that post for five consecutive one-year terms.

One of the primary concerns during Jenckes' tenure was to settle the border dispute with the neighboring Connecticut colony . Between his two terms in office, Jenckes was with Richard Partridge in England to seek royal intervention in the dispute. Connecticut refused to accept the border between the two colonies established by the commissioners of both colonies when they met in Stonington, Connecticut in 1703 . There was also a dispute between the Rhode Island Colony and the Massachusetts Colony over the boundary. Jenckes and his partner managed to get the crown to decide in their favor. Several years later, in 1726, Jenckes was one of four Rhode Island commissioners who met with the Connecticut commissioners to determine the borderline between the two colonies. The following year Jenckes wrote a letter on behalf of the General Assembly to George II , thanking him for protecting Rhode Island's charter privileges.

Jenckes was married twice. He first married Martha Brown (1658-1723), daughter of Mary Holmes and John Brown. The couple had nine children together and at least 68 grandchildren. Her children were: Obadiah (1684–1768), Nathaniel (1687 / 8–1753), Martha (1689–1756), Catherine (1694–1792), John (1696–1721), Lydia (1703–1757), Joseph, Mary and Esther. After the death of his first wife, he married on February 3, 1727 Alice Dexter (1665-1736), the widow of John Dexter, the son of Gregory Dexter , an early President of Providence and Warwick. Alice was the daughter of Sarah Whipple and John Smith. Jenckes died in 1740 without leaving a will. He last suffered from a mental illness. His son Nathaniel was appointed administrator of the estate. Jenckes Jenckes was buried on the North Burial Ground in Providence , according to John Osborne Austin , but this is not true. The family cemetery in Pawtucket, Providence County, where he was actually buried, no longer exists.
