George Hazard (born October 9, 1700 in Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations , † 1738 in South Kingstown , Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantationsd) was a Deputy Governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.

Career

George Hazard, son of Penelope Arnold and George Hazard from South Kingstown, was born during the colonial era. His great-grandfather Thomas Hazard came from Boston ( Massachusetts ) and settled in Portsmouth down (Rhode Iceland). His grandfather Robert Hazard still lived there. Nothing is known about George Hazard's youth. Hazard became Freeman in South Kingstown in 1721 and a deputy in 1729 - a post he held for five years. In 1733 he was speaker in the House of Representatives. Hazard was then elected lieutenant governor of the colony in 1734. He held the post until his death in 1738.

family

Hazard married Sarah Carder, daughter of Mary Whipple and James Carder. She died in 1738 shortly after her husband, who probably died in the spring of 1738, as his will was dated May 22, 1738. The couple had seven children together: Mary, George, Abigail, Sarah, Penelope, Carder and Arnold. Hazard's mother, Penelope Arnold, was the daughter of Abigail Wilbur and Caleb Arnold, and the granddaughter of Governor Benedict Arnold and the settler Samuel Wilbur junior . She was also the great-granddaughter of two Portsmouth Compact signatories , John Porter and Samuel Wilbore . Lieutenant Governor Robert Hazard was his first cousin.

Trivia

Hazard paid his father £ 1,000 in 1733 for a farm called Foddering Place, where he built a large mansion. In his will, he left this farm to his son, also known as George Hazard, who became Mayor of Newport .
