Lonchophylla is a genus of bats from the family of leaf noses (Phyllostomidae). The species occur in Central and South America.
features
The representatives of the genus reach a head-trunk length of 45 to 65 mm and a tail length of 7 to 10 mm. The forearms are 30 to 48 mm long. Smaller species such as Lonchophylla mordax weigh an average of 8.5 g, while larger species such as Lonchophylla robusta weigh an average of 16.3 g. The fur has a reddish brown color on the back, the underside is generally lighter. Like the closely related flower bats , Lonchophylla species have an elongated snout. The nasal blade is longer and narrower than that of Lionycteris spurrelli , which belongs to the same subfamily.
Way of life
These bats can be found in rainforests and other humid habitats. They rest in tree hollows and occasionally in rock hollows. Small groups often form there. Lonchophylla species eat nectar , pollen , fruits and insects.
