Elisha Brown
Elisha Brown (born May 25, 1717 in Providence , Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations , † April 20, 1802 in North Providence , Rhode Island ) was a Deputy Governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.
Career
Elisha Brown, son of Mary Harris and James Brown, was born in Providence County during colonial times . His great-grandfather was Chad Brown , one of the earliest settlers in Rhode Island and a Baptist minister . Nothing is known about Elisha Brown's youth. Brown was in the General Assembly . He owned a large piece of land, which he lost during the financial troubles in the middle of the 18th century . During the Ward-Hopkins controversy, he sided with Samuel Ward . He was lieutenant governor under him from 1765 to 1767. He later moved to Wenscutt (now part of North Providence) where he became a member of the Society of Friends . Brown was married twice. He first married Martha Smith, daughter of Deborah Angell and John Smith. The two colonial presidents Gregory Dexter and Roger Williams were their great-grandfathers. After the death of his first wife, Brown married Hannah Cushing, the widow of Elijah Cushing and daughter of Lieutenant Governor James Barker .
He was the uncle of wealthy businessman and Congressman John Brown and anti- slavery activist Moses Brown .
