Jonathan Nichols (born June 10, 1681 in Newport , Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations , † August 2, 1727 ibid) was a Deputy Governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.

Career

Jonathan Nichols, son of Hannah and Thomas Nichols, was born and raised in Newport County during the colonial era . Nothing is known about his youth. Nichols became a Freeman in Newport in 1707 . Between 1713 and 1727 he served either as a MP or assistant. In 1718 he held the rank of captain . In 1721 he was appointed to a committee that was responsible for the construction or repair of Fort Ann on Goat Island . In May 1727 he became lieutenant governor of the colony. But he died three months later in August before the end of his term of office. Thomas Frye became his successor.

While his father, an original legatees of the Town of East Greenwich , was stopped he and his family in Newport. Jonathan Nichols married Elizabeth Lawton, daughter of Mary Wodell and Robert Lawton. The couple had eight children between 1708 and 1723. Nichols was buried on the Nichols-Hassard Burial Ground in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
