William Brenton

William Brenton (born in England in the early 17th century , † 1674 in Newport , Rhode Island ) was an English politician.

The Brenton's were a wealthy family during the reign of Charles I. They lived in Hammersmith ( London ). After emigrating to New England , William Brenton served as an MP in Boston . He was later Lieutenant Governor of the Colony of Rhode Island . Then he was president of the colony between 1660 and 1661. Under the charter of Charles II, he held the post of governor of the colony between 1666 and 1669 . Brenton was awarded a large piece of land due to his surveying work in the colony. He surveyed and planned a substantial part of Newport, where he built a large house near what is now Fort Adams . He was also a Quaker .

Honors

The Brenton Point and Brenton's Reef are named after him.
