James Barker junior (* 1623 in Harwich , England , † 1702 in Newport , Rhode Island ) was an English politician . He was Lieutenant Governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations .

Career

James Barker, Jr., son of James Barker, Sr., was born in Essex during the reign of James I. Nothing is known about his youth. He sailed to New England with his father . His father died on the trip. Also on the ship was the future Colonial Governor of Rhode Island, Nicholas Easton . After his father's death, Barker came under the care of his aunt, Christianna Beecher, who married Easton. Easton took her and Barker to Newport. As an adult, Barker pursued a public career. He held the positions of Commissioner, Assistant and Member of Parliament for many years. In the Royal Bylaws of 1663 , which formed the basis of the Rhode Island government for nearly two centuries, he was named as one of the ten assistant (magistrates) in the colony. During King Philip's War in 1676 it was voted that the council should consist of the brightest residents of the colony and that these people should sit in the next session of the General Assembly. Barker was one of the 16 men selected for the council. In 1678 he was elected lieutenant governor. He served under Colonial Governors Benedict Arnold , William Coddington, and John Cranston . The two first named died in their office in 1678. Barker was a Baptist minister . He married Barbara Dungan, the eldest daughter of Frances and William Dungan.
