Joseph Whipple junior (born December 30, 1687 in Providence , Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations , † 1750 in Newport , Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations) was a wealthy trader and politician. He was a Lieutenant Governor ( Deputy Governor ) of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.

Career

Joseph Whipple Jr., son of Colonel Joseph Whipple , was born in Providence County during the colonial era . He was born the third of twelve children. His father was a trader. Nothing is known about the youth of Joseph Whipple junior. Whipple became a shipowner who traded in many goods, including slaves . In this context he often traded with the Spanish and French , who were at war with the British . Whipple was considered the richest member of his extended family of merchants, although the full amount of his estate could not be found in public records. He served as vice governor of the colony from 1743 to 1745 and from 1746 to 1747.

Whipple was very wealthy and also married into wealthy families. His first wife was Anne Almy. The couple had four children: Joseph, Christopher, Joseph, and William. All of her children died in childhood. His wife died two weeks after their last child. After her death, he married Sarah Redwood, probably the daughter of his business partner Abraham Redwood. Redwood was a merchant ship owners, slave owner and philanthropist , which a large and profitable plantations on Antigua ( West Indies had). He was also the founder of the Redwood Library in Newport. Whipple had nine children with his second wife: Sarah, Joseph , Benjamin, Abraham, William, Amey, Alice, Mehitable and Mary. His second child, Joseph Whipple III, was Lieutenant Governor of the colony from 1751 to 1753. Whipple's will was dated May 28, 1750 and read on July 2, 1750, suggesting that he died in June 1750.
