John Wanton

John Wanton (born December 24, 1672 in Scituate , Massachusetts Bay Colony , † July 5, 1740 in Newport , Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations ) was a British politician and officer. He was Lieutenant Governor and Colonial Governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Colonial Governor William Wanton was his brother, and Colonial Governors Gideon Wanton and Joseph Wanton were his nephews.

Career

John Wanton, son of Edward Wanton, was born in Plymouth County during colonial times . His father worked as a shipbuilder. Edward Wanton converted to Quakerism after witnessing the persecution of these people. He also worked as a preacher. Over time, he lived in York ( Maine ), Boston (Massachusetts) and Scituate (Massachusetts) before he went to Rhode Iceland. Nothing is known about the youth of John Wanton. Wanton was a trader, and like his father a Quaker. His first public service post he took up in 1706 as an MP from Newport, which he held for several years. He also worked as a speaker in the House of Representatives. In 1706 he was made a colonel after chasing after French privateers with John Dublin, who was injured in the fighting. He served as vice governor of the colony from 1721 to 1722 and from 1729 to 1734. After the death of his brother William, he became the new colonial governor in 1734 and held the post for six consecutive terms until his death in 1740. Wanton was buried in Coddington Cemetery in Newport.

He married Mary Stover, daughter of Elizabeth Norton and Sylvester Stover from Cape Neddick, Maine. The couple had five children.
