Al Ghuraba Media

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Al-Ghuraba Media is a media outlet of the Sunni Islamic State militia . The name al-Ghuraba means "The Strangers", which goes back to the concept of al-gharīb that is widespread in Salafism .

founding

Al-Ghuraba Media is said to have been founded in September 2014 in the Syrian city of Raqqa by the Egyptian-Austrian Islamist Mohamed Mahmoud , who calls himself Abu Usama al-Gharib, according to the Austrian magazine Profil . However, the date cannot be correct, as the name Al Ghuraba Media was already mentioned in December 2013 in response to a request from the left in the Bundestag .

In any case, it should be noted that al-Ghuaraba Media initially mainly employed German-speaking jihadists . The magazine Profil writes that Al Ghuraba Media, together with several sites in social networks and a radio station, is at the heart of IS propaganda. Mohamed Mahmoud had therefore already drafted the idea for this network during his time in prison in Vienna in a 300-page policy paper. Mahmoud became known, among other things, through the GIMF, which he founded in 2005. The main task of this platform was to translate Arabic-language propaganda from al-Qāʿida into German. He was always of the opinion that one had to spread propaganda on the Internet in an accessible manner so that "the unbelievers [sic.!] Are shocked".

Relation to Turkī al-Binʿalī

Exact statements about the origin and the people behind al-Ghuraba Media cannot be made at this point due to the sources. It should be noted, however, that Mahmoud, due to his texts on the concept of the foreign, which he published through his GIMF, could very well be the head behind this media outlet. The name of this media office shows a lot of similarities with his ideas and he had already gained his first experience as a publicist with the GIMF, made a name for himself and built a circle of followers. It should also be noted that Al Ghuraba Media translates many important texts of the IS organization, especially by Turkī al-Binʿalī , who also describes himself as a stranger, into German - an example at this point is “Reaching out one's hands to the Bayah an al-Baghdadi ”mentioned by al-Binʿalī.

distribution

In response to a request from the Die Linke parliamentary group in the Bundestag on December 9, 2013, on the subject of which “media outlets” for German Islamists in Syria , the federal government replied that both “ShamCenter” and “Al Ghuraba Media” were known. Both posts would publish mainly in German in order to attract German audiences to Syria. At first it was apparently just a Twitter account that distributed the IS propaganda. In addition, publications by jihadists from the Caucasus and a video by Boko Haram were also tweeted. This account is now blocked, but there is still an official website at jimdo.com - a German provider of websites. Under no circumstances should it be assumed that Jimdo has anything to do with the IS organization.
