history
The state railway company Horonai Tetsudō opened on November 28, 1880 the first Hokkaidō railway line between Sapporo and Temiya (Otaru). At the current location of the station, a stop called Garugawa ( 軽 川 ) was initially created . After cargo handling began in October 1881, the station was finally opened three years later. In 1889 the Horonai Tetsudō was sold to the mining and railway company Hokkaidō Tankō Tetsudō , which in turn was nationalized on July 1, 1906. In 1909 the Railway Authority (later the Ministry of Railways ) expanded the Otaru – Sapporo line to two tracks .
In May 1921 the company Karuishi kidō was founded , which built a small railway from Garugawa to Ishikari . The Karuishi Railway , opened on October 28, 1922, was 8.2 km long and had a gauge of 762 mm; the chariots were drawn by horses. The construction of a 10 km long extension to Ishikari-hotori never came about. The operation ceased from September 1937 and on October 23, 1940 the railway was finally shut down.
Garugawa Station was given its current name on November 15, 1952. The Japanese State Railways electrified the section of the Hakodate main line leading through Teine on August 28, 1968. On October 1, 1980, it stopped handling goods for cost reasons, and checked baggage on March 14, 1985. As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the possession of the new company JR Hokkaido on April 1, 1987 . After several years of construction, the completely new station was opened on May 25, 2002; the cost was 5 billion yen (about 45 million euros ).
