links
Kutchan is a through station on the Hakodate Main Line from Hakodate to Sapporo , Hokkaidō's main railway line. This is operated by the company JR Hokkaido . Regional trains run every one to two hours to Otaru and five times a day to Oshamambe . Kutchan is the terminus of almost all trains; continuous connections from Otaru to Oshamambe are rare. In addition, express trains (Niseko Liner) run once a day from Sapporo to Kutchan.
Especially in winter, Kutchan is an important gateway to the neighboring tourist destination Niseko , which is known for several winter sports areas . There is a bus route from the train station.
investment
The station on the edge of the city center is oriented from north to south and has three tracks. Two of them are used for passenger traffic and are located on a central platform . A covered overpass creates the connection to the reception building on the east side of the facility. A locomotive depot stood on the west side of the station . It was in operation until 1974 when it was demolished. A fenced turntable has been preserved .

history
The railway company Hokkaidō Tetsudō opened the station on October 15, 1904, together with the Neppu – Kozawa section of the Hakodate main line. After the nationalization on July 1, 1907, the Railway Office (later the Railway Ministry ) was responsible. It took on November 15, 1919 a branch line from Kutchan to Kyōgoku in operation, which was initially called the "Kyōgoku Line". From 1940 the Kyōgoku line continued to Datemombetsu and was now referred to as the Iburi line . For cost reasons, the Japanese State Railways stopped handling goods on February 1, 1984, and checked baggage on March 14, 1985. The Iburi line was shut down on November 1, 1986 along its entire length. As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the possession of JR Hokkaido on April 1, 1987 .
future
The Hokkaidō-Shinkansen high-speed line has ended at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto station since 2016 . Construction is currently underway on the second stage to Sapporo. In Kutchan, an elevated system for Shinkansen trains is to be built immediately to the west of the existing train station and is scheduled to open in 2031. The originally planned ground level design was discarded in order to defuse the separating effect.
