The Hokkaidō Tetsudō ( Japanese 北海道 鉄 道 ) was a private Japanese railway company . After its establishment in 1900, it built and operated part of the Hakodate main line between Hakodate and Otaru in the south of the island of Hokkaidō . In 1907 it was nationalized.

history

The company was founded in Tokyo in May 1900 and was led by Kitagaki Kunimichi , the former governor of Hokkaidō . The intention was to connect the existing rail network in the central part of Hokkaidō with Hakodate , where connections to ferries to the main island of Honshū should be made. On December 10, 1902, the Hokkaidō Tetsudō opened two non-connected sections: on the one hand between the Hakodate station and Hongō (today Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto ), on the other hand between Shikaribetsu and Ranshima. This was followed by the Hongō – Mori , Shikaribetsu – Yamanichi and Ranshima – Otaru sections (all on June 28, 1903), Mori – Oshamambe –Neppu on November 3, 1903, Yamanichi– Kozawa on July 18, 1904 and Kozawa – Neppu on 15. October 1904.

With the opening of the last missing section between Otaru and Minami-Otaru on August 1, 1905, the total of 255 km long route was completed. The short connection within the city of Otaru to the route of the Hokkaidō Tankō Tetsudō was initially reserved for freight traffic. Continuous passenger trains between Hakodate and Sapporo wrong the first time on September 8, 1906. As a result of in March 1906 by the Japanese parliament adopted nationalization law , the Hokkaido tetsudō became the property of the state on July 1, 1907th The operation was then carried out by the Railway Office of the Cabinet (later the Ministry of Railways ).
