Minami-Otaru is a through station and former separation station on the Hakodate main line from Hakodate to Sapporo , Hokkaidō's main railway line. This is operated by the company JR Hokkaido . Regional trains between these stations run on average every 10 to 20 minutes. There are also express trains (Ishikari Liner) from Otaru via Sapporo to Iwamizawa and the half-hourly express train Rapid Airport to New Chitose Airport . The diesel- powered express train Niseko Liner connects Sapporo with Kutchan (one train pair daily). Hokkaidō Chūō Bus bus lines stop at the station .

The station is located in the Sumiyoshi-chō district and faces southeast to northwest. It has two tracks, both of which are used for passenger traffic (a third track has been removed). The tracks and the covered central platform are in a cut . A covered overpass creates the connection to the ground level reception building on the northeast side of the facility. This is integrated into a supermarket of the 7-Eleven retail chain , which also sells tickets. A four-lane road bridge also spans the track system.

history

The state railway company Horonai Tetsudō opened provisionally the Kaiunchō station (Bahnhof 運 町 ) on November 11, 1880 . The official opening followed two and a half weeks later on November 28, 1880. The line at that time comprised the part of the later Hakodate main line between Sapporo and this station and the subsequent Temiya line to the port of Otaru. A major fire destroyed the Kaiunchō station in May 1881. It was rebuilt at its present location by a few dozen meters and put into operation on May 22, 1881 under the new name Sumiyoshi ( 住 吉 ).

From December 11, 1889, the private mining and railway company Hokkaidō Tankō Tetsudō was responsible. This renamed the station on June 11, 1900 in Otaru ( 小樽 ). With the commissioning of a connection to Takeshima station (today Otaru station ) on August 1, 1905, there was a connection to the route of the Hokkaidō Tetsudō in the direction of Hakodate . The short section was initially only used by freight trains, from September 8, 1906, also by continuous passenger trains between Sapporo and Hakodate. The nationalization of the Hokkaidō Tankō Tetsudō happened on October 1, 1906, the Hokkaidō Tetsudō followed on July 1, 1907.

The now responsible Railway Authority (later the Ministry of Railways ) expanded in 1909/10 the part of the Hakodate main line and the Temiya line that ran through Otaru to double-track. From July 1907 to August 1912, passenger traffic was suspended. Since July 15, 1920, the station has been called Minami-Otaru. In November 1943, the ministry had the second track on the Temiya line removed again. Passenger traffic to the port ceased again from October 1943 to November 1948 and was finally stopped on May 14, 1962. The Japanese State Railways gave up cargo handling in Minami-Otaru on October 1, 1965, and on August 28, 1968 they electrified the Hakodate main line. On October 1, 1974, it also stopped checking baggage, which had become unprofitable. The remaining freight traffic on the Temiya Line ended on November 5, 1985; the route has not been used since then. As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the possession of the new company JR Hokkaido on April 1, 1987 .
