The Alagoas Foliage-Gleaner ( Philydor novaesi ) is probably extinct bird art from the family of potters birds . It is endemic to the Brazilian state of Alagoas . The type epithet novaesi refers to the Brazilian zoologist Fernando da Costa Novaes (1927-2004) from the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi .

description

The Alagoas leaf scout reached a size of 18 centimeters. The forehead and reins were dull ocher and black scales. The parting was black-brown and showed a dark olive-brown scale pattern. The stripes above and below the eyes were beige and cinnamon in color and contrasted with a dull, chestnut-colored eye stripe. A blackish, chestnut-colored dotted streak stretched from the jaw to the ear covers. The neck and top were ocher-chestnut colored. The rump and tail were reddish brown. The underside was light reddish-brown with an olive-brown tinge to the belly and the underside of the tail. His voice consisted of a slightly sloping series of uü-uü-uü whistles. His alarm call was a stale .

Occurrence and habitat

The Alagoas leaf scout was endemic to a 36 km² forest area near Murici in Alagoas. It occurs at an altitude of 400 to 550 meters and inhabits selectively cleared and old secondary forests from the undergrowth layer to below the treetop.

Way of life

The Alagoas leaf scout lived individually, in pairs or in small groups. It has also been seen in mixed flocks of birds, such as the pale-throated tree climber ( Xiphorhynchus fuscus ). The food is gathered from leaves, bark, crevices and debris and consists of beetles, grasshoppers, ants and larvae that are picked from the dead wood. Little is known about its breeding biology. An immature bird was collected in January and moulting was observed in February.

status

Since the discovery of the species in 1979 until 1999, the forest near Murici has shrunk from 70 km² to around 30 km². The forest is now very fragmented and large areas have been converted into pastureland and sugar cane plantations. Since January 1999, the forest fragments have been threatened by additional clearing roads and fires from adjacent plantations. In 1979 the species was described as conspicuous and easy to observe. However, it was rarely seen on subsequent expeditions and there were no confirmed sightings between 1992 and 1998. Few specimens were found in 1998 and 1999 and four individuals were observed in 2000. In April 2003 the species was sighted in the Frei Caneca Private Reserve in Pernambuco . The Alagoas leaf scout was last sighted in 2011 and in 2019 it was added to the IUCN's list of modern-day extinct bird species.
