Dante Martins Teixeira

Dante Luiz Martins Teixeira (born July 15, 1957 in Barbacena , Minas Gerais ), often Dante Martins Teixeira , is a Brazilian ornithologist and ethnozoologist at the departments of ornithology and vertebrates at the Museu Nacional da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro .

Life

Teixeira is the son of Robespierre Martins Teixeira and Maria Beatriz Martins Teixeira. He was introduced to ornithology by Helmut Sick . In 1976 he began studying biology at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro , where he obtained a bachelor's degree in 1979 . In the same year he studied at the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba in Argentina , where he completed the courses in ethology and mathematical methodology, applied bird protection , biocides and bird deaths, ornithology and ecology, as well as systematics and numerical taxonomy . In 1987 he graduated with the thesis As fontes do paraíso - um ensaio sobre a ornitologia no Brasil holandês (1624-1654) under the direction of Helmut Sick for a master's degree in life sciences at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. In 2000 he received his doctoral thesis O mito da natureza intocada: as aves do Brasil Holandês (1624–1654) como exemplo para a história recente da fauna do Novo Mundo under the direction of Nelson Papavero and Miguel A. Monné at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. In 2011 he completed his habilitation at the Universidade de São Paulo after completing a two-year postdoctoral phase in the fields of life sciences, humanities and Brazilian history.

Teixeira's research interests include ornithology, biogeography , ethnozoology , the history of the natural sciences , Dutch Brazil , animals in art, animal mapping, and historical journeys by naturalists.

Teixeira was married to Cecilia Torres (1952–1985), whom he honored in 1987 in the kind of epithet of the Alagoaslaubtyranns ( Phylloscartes ceciliae ). He also described the Alagoas leaf scout ( Philydor novaesi ) (1983), the black-backed ant catcher ( Terenura sicki ) (1983), the Alagoas ant hatchers ( Myrmotherula snowi ) (1985), the Bahia tapaculo ( Scytalopus psychopompus ) (1989) and the Reed ant catcher ( Formicivora acutirostris ) (1995). In 1986 he discovered the dark-headed leaf scout ( Cichlocolaptes mazarbarnetti ), a species of bird that may have become extinct today.
