The Bahia Tapaculo ( Eleoscytalopus psychopompus ) is a rare species of bird in the family of Tapaculo . It is endemic to the Brazilian state of Bahia .

description

The Bahia Tapaculo reaches a length of 11.5 centimeters. The head is slate gray with a white spot on the cheek. The top and sides are slate gray with a bluish tint. The rump and shoulder feathers are washed out in the color of cinnamon and rust. The cheeks, throat and stomach are whitish. The belly shows an inconspicuous scale pattern. The belly and rump show cinnamon-rust colored spots. The thighs are dark slate blue. The legs are pink. The beak is black with a whitish jaw base. In the past there have been some doubts about the species status of Bahia tapaculos. Some researchers regarded it as a subspecies of the white breasted tapaculos ( Eleoscytalopus indigoticus ). But new research into its morphology, voice, and genetics suggests it is a species in its own right.

Way of life

Little is known about his way of life. The known specimens come from flooded areas with dense vegetation in lowland forests. A couple caught in October 1983 were in a nest and both sexes had active gonads.

status

The first male was collected from Ilhéus in July 1944 . Thereafter, the species remained missing until a pair was caught near Valença in October 1983 . The Bahia tapaculo was photographed for the first time in the mid-1990s. In 2007 tape recordings were made with his voice and another photo in the Reserva Ecológica Michelin near Ituberá . The Atlantic rainforest in Bahia was heavily cleared in the 20th century, so that only 10% of its former area is preserved. BirdLife International estimates the population of Bahia Tapaculos to be between 50 and 250 specimens.

Systematics

The species was originally classified in genus Scytalopus . Since 2008 it forms the genus Eleoscytalopus together with the white breasted tapaculo .
