The rumpet wilts (Rhinocryptidae) are a family in the order of the passerine birds (Passeriformes). They are small to medium-sized ground dwellers with short, round wings. Many of the species that belong to this family have very long, strong toes. It is noticeable that their nostrils are covered by large, movable flaps and that the birds often erect their long tails.

The plumage of most species is patterned gray or brown, black or red-brown. Most species do not exhibit sexual dimorphism .

Genera and species

The genus of the ribbon birds (Melanopareia) with its five species has long been seen as part of the family of the Bürzelstelzer. However, recent molecular genetic studies have shown that they are not particularly closely related to these. The genus was therefore placed in its own family (Melanopareiidae).
