Alain Corbin

Alain Corbin (born January 12, 1936 in Lonlay-l'Abbaye , Orne Department ) is a French historian and university professor.

Live and act

Corbin studied at the University of Caen with Pierre Vidal-Naquet . He taught in Tours, Limoges and then at the University of Paris I (Sorbonne) and is mainly concerned with the history of France in the 19th and 20th centuries. His early work is part of the research tradition of the Annales School . Later, Corbin increasingly oriented himself towards Lucien Febvre's history of mentality . Corbin has published books on a wide range of topics, such as the history of smells, the beach and bathing culture, or “sexual violence in history”. He is president of the Societé d'histoire de la revolution de 1848 .
