The Alemanni Museum Weingarten in the Alten Kornhaus in Weingarten in the Ravensburg district houses the rich archaeological finds of the early medieval burial ground of Weingarten, which was excavated and documented between 1952 and 1956 . On display are well-preserved art, jewelry and everyday objects as well as weapons that are of outstanding importance for research into the Alemanni and Merovingian times in southwest Germany .
After difficult restoration , conservation and documentation work lasting over 20 years , the finds were shown to the public on December 21, 1976 in the museum run by the city of Weingarten. The old permanent exhibition was supplemented by an installation of two graves in the 1990s, but after more than 30 years no longer corresponded to the current state of research and a modern presentation. In the first half of 2008, the museum was completely redesigned and officially opened on June 6, 2008. The modern exhibition, which is didactically tailored to different groups of visitors, provides both adults and children with comprehensive information on the burial ground and the life of the people buried.
The old granary was built in 1621 as the municipal granary and fruit market in the realm of Altdorf (now Weingarten). The upper floor later served as a theater and gym for a long time . In 1975 the city restored the building at a cost of 1.5 million DM and expanded it as a museum and cultural center. In the course of the redesign of the museum, the Kornhaus was equipped with an elevator and now enables disabled people to have barrier-free access to the museum and the gallery.
