Claudia Theune (born August 15, 1959 in Kleve , at times Claudia Theune-Vogt ) is a German medieval and modern archaeologist and university professor at the University of Vienna with a focus on historical archeology .

After finishing school in Kevelaer , Claudia Theune studied in Marburg and Bonn . She did her doctorate in Marburg in 1988 on the early medieval settlement history in the western Lake Constance area , the Hegau . She then worked from 1988 to 1994 as a research assistant for the evaluation of the early medieval burial ground in Weingarten and the exhibition project Hesse and Thuringia - From the Beginnings to the Reformation and a scholarship holder at the Philipps University of Marburg. From 1994 to 2000 she worked as a research assistant at the Chair for Prehistory and Protohistory at the Humboldt University in Berlin . After Theune completed her habilitation in 2001 with a thesis on structural changes in the Alamannia based on archaeological sources , she was senior research assistant and private lecturer at the Humboldt University in Berlin until 2006. Since January 1, 2007, she has been a university professor for Prehistory and Early History with a focus on archeology of the Middle Ages and modern times (historical archeology) at the Institute for Prehistory and Historical Archeology at the University of Vienna.

Theune researches the epochs of the Roman Empire , the entire Middle Ages and modern times , or contemporary history . The focus was on everyday history , craft and trade history , production and exchange (e.g. early medieval pearls, craft in rural settlements, gold mining in the Gastein Valley ), settlement archeology in the late medieval desert of Pagram near Frankfurt (Oder) , or Drösing an der March, as well as the history of science in the subject . She is currently researching, in particular, settlement and economic structures in marginal Alpine settlement areas ( gold mining in the Alps , Alpine crossings, archaeological and architectural research at Hanfelden Castle ) in the late Middle Ages and early modern times, as well as the connection between archeology and contemporary history. A particular focus in recent years has been on contemporary archeology , the archaeological research of former concentration camps and forced camps in Austria and Germany. In addition to excavations in the former Sachsenhausen and Mauthausen concentration camps and their satellite camps, as well as in internment camps in the Caribbean (so-called Five Islands ), she researches the material legacies of the victims and perpetrators and uses the objects to investigate the inmates' survival strategies.

Claudia Theune is President of the European Archaeological Society Ruralia and Chairwoman of the Austrian Society for Medieval Archeology.

Claudia Theune is the sister of the former soccer player and former national soccer coach Tina Theune .
