Alan Carpenter (born January 4, 1957 in Albany , Western Australia ) is an Australian journalist and politician . He was the 28th Prime Minister of Western Australia from January 2006 to September 2008  . He is also a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly.

Carpenter grew up in Western Australia and attended Mt Lockyer Primary School and Albany Senior High School until 1974. From 1977 he studied political science at the University of Western Australia and graduated in 1979 from.

Career

Carpenter then worked for about two years as a journalist for the Albany Advertiser newspaper . In 1982 he ended this activity. He traveled through Asia and Europe for two years, including 11 months in Asia. In 1986 he returned to his homeland and worked in Perth as a political reporter for TVW-7. In 1990 he moved to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and was responsible for the politics department in Western Australia. In 1992 he became the head of The 7.30 Report magazine and in 1996 of the political magazine Stateline .

In 1996 he quit his journalistic activities and turned to politics. Between 2001 and 2006 he was Minister for State Development and Minister for Energy, Minister for Education and Training and Minister for Education and Indigenous Affairs.

He was elected Prime Minister of Western Australia on January 25, 2006, succeeding Geoff Gallop . During his tenure as prime minister, three ministers were dismissed for corruption in 2006.

Carpenter is married to Annmarie de Costa and has four daughters (Grace, Claudia, Isabelle and Ava).
