Alan Ralph Millard

Alan Ralph Millard (born December 1, 1937 in the London Borough of Harrow ) is a British ancient orientalist .

Life

He worked on excavations at Tell Nebi Mend (ancient Kadesh ) and Tell Rif'at (ancient Arpad ) in Syria, in Petra in Jordan and in the Assyrian capital Nimrud in Iraq. During his work at the British Museum from 1961 to 1964, he rediscovered the epic of Atrahasis , which had been hidden in a drawer for several decades. From 1964 to 1970 he was a librarian at the Tyndale Library in Cambridge and taught Akkadian at the School of Oriental and African Studies for a year . In 1970 he was appointed Rankin Lecturer in Hebrew and Ancient Semitic Languages ​​in Liverpool . He was a 1984 Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and studied in a team led by Yigael Yadin . His main interests are in Semitic epigraphy and the processing of Akkadian cuneiform tablets and Aramaic inscriptions as well as writing practices in the ancient Middle East.

He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and a member of the Society for Old Testament Studies.
