Alan Thomson (born May 3, 1960 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish bass guitarist.

Thomson had violin and piano lessons as a child and played guitar from the age of thirteen. With bassist Neil Fairweather , drummer Tim Brittain and saxophonist and guitarist David Roy , he founded the band The Arthur Trout Band in 1976 , which performed in the Glasgow region until 1980 and took part in the Stonehenge and Bristol Ashton Court Festival in 1980 .

Thomson then accompanied singer-songwriter John Martyn on his Grace And Danger tour of Great Britain, which was the beginning of a collaboration that lasted until Martyn's death in 2009. He has also performed with musicians such as Phil Collins , Eric Clapton , Robert Palmer , David Gilmour , Linda Lewis and Bert Jansch . In 1989 he went on a tour with Julia Fordham .

From 1992 he toured for several years as a duo with Rick Wakeman , later with Wakeman and his band. He is bass player in John Jorgenson's Electric Band , The Backroom Boys and Martin Barre's touring band .
