Alan John Watson, Baron Watson of Richmond CBE (born February 3, 1941 ) is a British politician ( Liberal Democrats ), presenter and advertising specialist .

life and career

Alan John Watson of Richmond was born in 1941 to Reverend John William Watson and Edna Mary Watson (née Peters). He received his early education in the Diocese of Cape Town , South Africa and the Kingswood School in Bath . Then he studied at Cambridge and earned an MA . He was also Vice President of the Cambridge Union Society .

Currently (December 2010) Watson is Chairman of CTN (Corporate Television Networks) and the European Board of Directors of Coca-Cola . Numerous leading UK and international firms consult him regularly as a public relations consultant . At the beginning of his career as a manager he was managing director of the advertising agency Charles Barker City for several years and finally a member of the supervisory board of many other advertising, public relations and media companies. Immediately after his time in Cambridge, he was discovered by television, where he designed various successful series for the BBC and moderated them himself on the basis of his own scripts. He has appeared in other programs and has garnered a number of awards over the years for his documentaries. In addition, he served as Chairman of the English Speaking Union for six years and is now the retired Chairman.

In addition to his obligations at a large number of British institutions, he has also gained further reputation through his work as the representative of the United Kingdom in UNICEF and received state awards in Romania . Watson also holds a number of different posts in universities in and outside the UK. Among other things, he is chairman of the Cambridge Foundation, high steward of the University of Cambridge for life, honorary doctorate from the University of St. Lawrence (USA), visiting professor in Leuven and honorary professor at the State University of St. Petersburg.

Politically he was active as chairman of the Liberal Party; In 1999 he was promoted to Life Peer as Baron Watson of Richmond , of Richmond in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames , and has been a member of the House of Lords since then . In Germany he was awarded the Great Cross of Merit with a Star for his services to German-British relations .

Watson was also the Liberal Party candidate for the Richmond (later Richmond and Barnes ) constituency in four British general election ; October 1974 , 1979 , 1983 , and 1987 . He lost to the Conservative Party in all the general election.

Publications

Lord Watson is the author of various widely recognized publications. On November 17, 2010 he presented excerpts from his book Jamestown : The Voyage of English with great success in the foyer of the Kettlerschen Hof in Münster .
