Albert Giese (Linguist)

Albert Giese (born July 26, 1803 in Wittenberg , † December 10, 1834 in Rostock ) was a German linguist .

Life

Giese had trained at the grammar schools in Zerbst and Wittenberg, went to the University of Halle-Wittenberg in 1823 to first study law. Encouraged by Karl Christian Reisig , he switched to philology and studied at the University of Berlin from 1825 . Under August Boeckh and Franz Bopp he dealt with Sanskrit and comparative grammar. In 1827 he received his doctorate in Halle (Saale) and until the end of his life was engaged in comparative linguistic research, which he applied to Greek dialectology .
