Life

Albert Volkmann spent his youth in the western Münsterland. He learned to deal with chess pieces at an early age, then, due to the lack of party chess opponents - as he once said - "all of his own accord to problem chess". In 1928 he made the acquaintance of the "Schwalbe", an association of problem chess friends who opened up a new world for him. From now on he devoted himself to the so-called "logical problems" with audition, preliminary and main plan. He was strongly influenced by the new German problem theorist Anton Trilling, who inspired him for the first presentation of a "double set Entfesselungsdresdner". Volkmann's domain was the two-move, but he also created remarkable things in the field of the new German multi-move - "Problems that, with their inventiveness, elegance, logical clarity and artistic formative power, are among the best, which German problem chess in the years after the 2nd Has produced World War "

Albert Volkmann's last job was as director of studies at the Augustinianum municipal high school in Greven / Westf. The enthusiastic classical philologist and committed pedagogue saw his most beautiful and most grateful task in showing the achievements of great poets and thinkers and thus awakening the powers of awe and amazement in young people. After his retirement he led a life in the rural community of Altenberge - in the immediate vicinity of Münster - in "otium cum dignitate" - following the example of antiquity.
