Albert Wyss (born November 18, 1843 in Biel ; died January 3, 1916 there ) was a Swiss architect and building contractor .

Education and career

Albert Wyss' apprenticeship as a carpenter and stone cutter took place in Germany, probably as an apprenticeship with subsequent years of traveling . There he also attended the building trade schools in Holzminden and Berlin. In 1870 he returned to Switzerland and opened a construction business in his hometown. He founded and thus worked at a time when Biel was developing strongly. As part of the city expansion south of the old town - the first alignment plan for the new town was from 1866 - Wyss initially built a large number of terraced houses for families with low incomes; At that time he also teamed up with the newly emerging building cooperatives , for example for the Pasquart cooperative in Seevorstadt.

An example of the early, mostly sparingly decorated and, in the broader sense, classicist buildings is the "Mattenhof", built in 1875 as a tavern with a sandstone facade and tightly structured windows. From 1895 he began building the representative residential and commercial buildings between the train station and the old town, such as the “Hotel zum Blauen Kreuz”, the only preserved late-historic hotel in Biel . Robert Walser lived and wrote here from 1913 to 1920 in an attic .

Towards the turn of the century, the style of the Wyssche construction company changed to a more monumental historicism, partly in neo-Gothic forms such as the abandoned department store "Knopf" of the merchant Meyer from 1902, or in the neo-baroque repertoire such as the apartment buildings on Jean-Sessler-Strasse. Later houses as the inn for Jean Monné in the market alley, which already Nouveau forms showed and the home style undertook building as house and factory Hofmann in Viaduktstrasse of 1911 are characterized by his son Otto Wyss (1874-1960), who after Albert's death, Construction business took over.
