Alberto Breccia Guzzo

Alberto Breccia Guzzo (born July 3, 1946 in Montevideo , † December 1, 2014 ) was a Uruguayan politician.

Alberto Breccia, brother of the journalist Sonia Breccia , was a lawyer by profession. He was already politically active during his studies at the Universidad de la República . As a member of the Movimiento de Liberación Nacional , he was indicted by the military justice in 1972 in the run-up to the emerging civil-military dictatorship in Uruguay and imprisoned in Libertad prison until 1975 . On September 8, 1980, he received his doctorate in law and social science. Breccia was elected as senator for the Movimiento de Participación Popular (MPP) in the Cámara de Senadores in 2004 and held this office from 2005 to 2010. In the Senate he was Vice President of the Commission for Education and Culture ( Comisión de Educación y Cultura ). He was also a member of the Comisión de Constitución y Legislación . On June 4, 2008 he was also appointed director of the Unidad Reguladora de los Servicios de Comunicaciones (Ursec). In March 2010 he took over the post of presidential secretary in the government of President José Mujica. He gave up the office in October 2012 in the wake of colon cancer . He was succeeded by Homero Guerrero . Since 2013, Breccia was again the Uruguayan ambassador to Italy. He had already worked as a diplomat from November 4, 2008 to 2010. He died at the age of 68 from complications from cancer.
