The Albertusburse is a student dormitory in Freiburg im Breisgau that is still reminiscent of a traditional form of bursa living today .

history

The sponsors and founders of the dormitory, the Franciscan Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus from Gengenbach , acquired a hotel in the Stühlinger district directly behind Freiburg's main train station in 1900 , which was subsequently converted into a dormitory. The Burse did not fall victim to the bombing of Freiburg on November 27, 1944 by the British Royal Air Force . After the Second World War, a new wing could even be built to accommodate more students. Initially, the residence was reserved for male Catholics. Today, neither gender nor religion is taken into account when admitting people. The last thing that was done in 2000 was gender segregation.

Up until a few years ago, the traditional form of dormitory was reminiscent of communal rooms, study rooms and the chapel, and above all the dining room in which the Gengenbach sisters provided the students with full board throughout the year. The monthly amount to be paid was divided into housing and subsistence allowance, a pure use as a place to live or a place to eat was normally not intended.

The Albertusburse was completely renovated between 2015 and 2018. Since then, one part of the building has been used permanently by Caritas. A multi-storey extension was built in the inner courtyard and the former large kitchen was torn down. A prayer room is still under construction (as of September 2019).

present

Today the Albertusburse is home to 80 students from different nations and religions. If desired, the students are still able to attend the prayer times and the morning Holy Mass of the supervising nuns .

patron

The patron saint of the house is the Holy Doctor of the Church Albertus Magnus , who himself worked as a reading master at a monastery school in Freiburg .
