Alboth! is a Swiss experimental band whose music can mainly be assigned to jazzcore .

history

The band, which was founded in 1991 by the then music student Michael Wertmüller in Bern , worked with a large number of changing musicians until 2000. After 2000 there were no further publications or appearances, but also no official dissolution. The complex music is often referred to as a mixture of free jazz and death metal . The longtime bassist Christian Pauli contradicted this in an OX interview:

“With the first records, others always reduced it to the simple denominator of Free Jazz and Death Metal. That was not true then, but even more so than it is today, because we actually listened to that kind of stuff back then. Both are wonderfully powerful stories that develop a very strong physical presence on stage. At the beginning everything was very tough, but today we have the feeling that everything is possible, everything is open. "

Other reviewers also point to avant-garde , industrial and modern classics as references.

The singer Daniel Lieder joined the band in 1992 and has since been the only permanent member alongside Michael Wertmüller . Since then, singing has played an important role in the band's music, which previously appeared purely instrumental. According to Lieder, the singing is "primarily aural information, in wide open and expanded word envelopes." Christian Pauli explains the singing as a variant of Scat :

“Our singer Lieder prepares a reservoir of words and syllables for each piece, a language of its own, if you will, which is rhythmically interwoven with the music. For us, the voice is an instrument that shouldn't be loaded with words so that it doesn't get any other meaning. "

Around 1999, Alboth! to Berlin , the musicians Kraut and Pauli stayed in Bern and were replaced by the guitarist Ti To. With this line-up, Alboth! the album Ecco la fiera . After this album there were still a few live appearances until the winter of 2000. After that there were no further publications or appearances by the band. The musicians of the last permanent line-up are still active in various projects and bands.

The work of the band received international recognition from critics, but hardly got beyond the status of an avant-garde project with the audience.
