Alumínio Brasileiro ( Albras ) is a joint venture between Norsk Hydro (51%) and Nippon Amazon Aluminum Co. Ltd. (NAAC) (49%). The company operates an aluminum smelter in Brazil near the city of Barcarena , Pará state, with a capacity of 460,000 t of primary aluminum per year. In 2013, 443,866 t of aluminum were produced.

2008 Albras achieved sales of 1.192 billion USD and a profit before tax of 148 million USD. In 2009, sales fell to $ 718 million and pre-tax income to $ 54 million as the price of aluminum fell from over $ 3,000 per tonne to below $ 1,500 per tonne.

The company was founded in October 1974. Construction work on the aluminum plant began in 1981. Production started in July 1985 and reached a capacity of 320,000 t per year in December 1986. By December 2001 the capacity had been increased to the current 460,000 t.

In February 2011, Norsk Hydro took over the aluminum business unit from the Brazilian company Vale . This included Vale's stake in Albras.

The aluminum plant is located near the city of Barcarena , State of Pará , on the southern bank of the Baía de Marajó . About 20 km to the east is the capital of the state of Pará, Belem .

The aluminum oxide is supplied from Alunorte's aluminum oxide plant , which is located directly next to the aluminum smelter . Alumina was priced at $ 297 per ton on December 31, 2009. The electricity is drawn from the Tucuruí hydropower plant owned by the electricity supplier Eletronorte .

Part of the aluminum produced (50,000 t) goes to the cable manufacturer Alubar , which is also located in the immediate vicinity of the aluminum smelter.

1,200 employees and 400 workers with long-term contracts work in the plant.
