The New Mexico Symphony Orchestra was an American symphony orchestra that existed from 1932 to 2011.

history

It emerged from the Albuquerque Civic Symphony (ACS) , which appeared in public for the first time in Albuquerque , New Mexico on November 13, 1932 under the direction of conductor Grace Thompson Edmister . Edminster's successor was William Kunkel in 1941, who was replaced by Kurt Frederick in 1945. Under the direction of Kurt Frederick the world premiere took from Arnold Schoenberg's work "A survivor from Warsaw" ( A Survivor from Warsaw instead) attached to the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising should remember. Frederick was replaced by Hans Lange in 1950 . Lange came from Constantinople , where his father Paul Lange was the Ottoman court conductor. Hans Lange himself was Arturo Toscanini's assistant and conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra before taking up the post in New Mexico. Under Lange, the ACS was transformed from a "college" amateur orchestra into a professional orchestra, today's New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. Guillermo Figueroa has been music director since 2000 .

The American drummer Robyn Schulkowsky , who is known as the "best female drummer in the world" and who now lives and works in Germany, was the solo drummer of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra from 1977 to 1980.

The orchestra had to file for bankruptcy on April 20, 2011 and was dissolved. Members and friends founded the "New Mexico Philharmonic" a year later.
