Alcohol You is an English-language pop song that was interpreted by Roxen . With the title she won the television show Selecția Națională 2020 and was supposed to represent Romania at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam .

Background and production

The song was written and composed by Ionuț Armaș. He composed the music with Viky Red, who also produced it. Armaș wrote the text with Breyan Isaac. This happened during a so-called songwriting camp in January 2020, from which the songs for the Selecția Națională 2020 were selected.

In contrast to previous years, it was announced on February 11, 2020 by the television station Televiziunea Română that the interpreter Larisa Roxana Giurgiu had been nominated internally as a representative. Five titles were selected for the national preliminary decision, from which Alcohol You emerged as the winner on March 1st. The song received the highest number of points from both the jury and the audience.

Music and lyrics

The title express various emotions such as sadness, despair and hope. In addition, it should be understood as the “hymn of universal love”. Finding inner peace is more important than the little everyday problems. The interpreter says that she always dealt with other people and forgot herself in the process. She does not want to experience understanding from everyone, but primarily from herself and people who are in a special connection with her. The content represents part of their own life story. Liana Stanciu, head of the Romanian delegation, described Alcohol You as a powerful song about love, how to deal with suffering, and the courage to choose what makes you stronger.

The line “Alcohol You” is to be seen as a play on words. When pronounced in English, it sounds similar to “I'll call you” (German: “I will call you”). In its overall context, the corresponding line in the song is “I'll call you when I'm drunk” (German: “I'll call you when I'm drunk”).

At the Eurovision Song Contest

Romania should have performed this song in the first semifinals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. However, due to the advancing COVID-19 pandemic , the competition was canceled.

reception

ESC Kompakt describes Alcohol You as “minimalist” and drew comparisons to Billie Eilish . The arrangement manages to "create a gloomy feeling when completely withdrawn". In addition, the title was compared with the Bulgarian Grand Prix title Tears Getting Sober from the same year. It was interesting which of the two titles would have prevailed in the end. On the other hand, the revision was criticized. escYOUnited spoke of a very clever text that goes well together. At ESCXtra there were voices praising both the new and the old version of the title. He was modern and the music video had shown the full potential for a possible appearance at the Eurovision Song Contest. A possible competition with the Bulgarian contribution was also seen as the greatest obstacle.

publication

The single was released on February 21, 2020. A slightly revised version was made available on March 11th. The percussion and strings step forward clearly, and the vocals have been adapted.

On April 4th a "Soundland Remix" was released.

The song was released with the music video which was shot under the direction of Bogdan Păun. They had carefully examined how the colors and elements of the set worked so that the meaning of the song could be best expressed. It shows Roxen in front of a wall with a drawing of her profile, with the lyrics being shown over the course of the video.
