Aldo Capitini (born December 23, 1899 in Perugia , † October 19, 1968 there ) was an Italian philosopher , anti-fascist and pacifist .

Life

In 1924 Capitini attended college in Pisa and graduated after four years with an MD in philosophy. He worked as a secretary and became a vegetarian . In 1933 he refused to join the Partito Nazionale Fascista as required by his employer and was dismissed. After the liberation of Italy in April 1945, he was rector of the University for Foreign Students in Perugia for two years. He sponsored international conferences on religious reform and a connection between East and West in the world in the context of nonviolence . To this end, he also started a center for religious orientation . At that time, Capitini supported Italy's first conscientious objector Pietro Pinna, who was sentenced to four years in prison. From then on he was considered the "father of non-violence in Italy".

In 1961 Aldo Capitini brought the Italian peace flag to Italy, which he had previously discovered among pacifists in England. He is also the founder of the annual peace march from Perugia to Assisi . In 1964, together with Pinna, he brought out the monthly Azione Nonviolenta and founded the Movimento Nonviolento at national level , which pursues a nonviolent policy in Italy. During the social unrest in the 1960s, Capitini tried to introduce a non-violent political program within the student movement ( Il potere è di tutti All people have power). He died in October 1968 after an operation.

In his honor, an international congress took place in Bolzano (South Tyrol) from June 17 to 19, 2011 under the motto “The long march of non-violence. Aldo Capitini and the 50th anniversary of the Perugia-Assisi peace march ”.
