Alecrim is a city in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil . It is located about 540 km west of Porto Alegre . The towns of Porto Mauá , Tuparendi , Santo Cristo and Porto Vera Cruz are neighboring . Alecrim was originally part of the municipality of Santo Cristo.

According to IBGE estimates , the place lost about one seventh of its inhabitants within 8 years; in 2018 it was estimated to have around 6,000 inhabitants, while in 2010 it was still more than 7,000.
