Alejandro García Caturla (born March 7, 1906 in Remedios , Villa Clara , † November 12, 1940 in Havana ) was a Cuban composer.

Life

Caturla received violin training as a child and studied law in Havana . From 1925 to 1927 he continued his musical training in Paris with Nadia Boulanger . After his return he founded a chamber orchestra and the magazine Los minoristas in Remedios , of which only one issue appeared.

He then worked as a violinist with the Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestra of Havana and founded the Sociedad de Conciertos in Caibarién , with which he performed the works of Debussy , Ravel and de Falla . On November 12, 1940, he was murdered.

In addition to some orchestral works that also received international attention - Leopold Stokowski performed his compositions in New York and Philadelphia - he composed numerous piano works and, between 1934 and 1937, the opera "Manita en el Suelo" for puppets and an actor based on a libretto by Alejo Carpentier , which was only premiered in 1985 in a reconstruction in Havana.
