Alemanía is a village in the Guachipas department of Salta Province in northwest Argentina . It is located at the mouth of the Río Alemanía in the Río de las Conchas , about 120 km south of the provincial capital Salta . The village was created in 1912 as a planned intermediate station on the Ramal C13 del Ferrocarril Belgrano railway line , which was to connect the cities of Salta and Cafayate .

The line was expanded from Salta to Alemanía, but the connection to Cafayate was never completed. In 1918 construction was stopped, in 1920 the construction project was finally abandoned. The train between Alemanía and Salta ran until the early 1970s.

Alemanía Railway Bridge

By 1920 there were over two hundred families in Alemanía; today (2011) there are still around ten. The village has a school and a chapel called Capilla San José. The place lives mainly from agriculture and to a lesser extent from tourism. The locals sell handicrafts and offer tours of the area on request. Every year in August the festival of Pachamama is celebrated. There is a campsite in town.

In the mountains above the village is the "Cascada de Alemanía" waterfall (location: 25 ° 40 ′  S , 65 ° 36 ′  W ), which can be reached in a five-hour walk. The descent takes about four hours.

Origin of name

It is believed that the name Alemanía comes from "Alemania", the Spanish word for Germany, and was given to the place by German engineers and track workers. According to another theory, the name dates back to the seventeenth century.
