Schwager, who won the Swiss singles championship in 1963 and 1968, started at the first two European championships in 1962 and 1964 as well as at the first two world championships in 1966 and 1968. He won the vice European championship in 1964 in Le Brassus, Switzerland, by finishing second behind the Finns Erkki Kohvakka . In 1966 and 1968 he was 16th and 15th at the World Championships. With the Swiss relay he was fourth three times in a row, with seasons from Scandinavia always taking the first three places.
