Alexa Karolinski

Alexa Karolinski (* 1984 in Berlin ) is a German filmmaker .

Life

Karolinski originally studied art history and worked for the magazine Vice and the television channel Arte , among others . She then went to the School of Visual Arts in New York .

In 2014 she won the Grimme Prize for her documentary Oma & Bella (2012) about her Jewish grandmother and her friend, both survivors of the Holocaust . In 2018, her documentary Life Signs about Jews in what is now Berlin was released in cinemas. The film is "in line with other masterpieces of Jewish documentary film" such as Why Israel by Claude Lanzmann , judged Fabian Wolff in the mirror .

In 2020, Karolinski and Anna Winger wrote the scripts for the Netflix miniseries Unorthodox based on the book of the same name by Deborah Feldman . Karolinski also acted as producer on the series.

Karolinski currently lives and works in Los Angeles .
