Alexander Forrest (born September 22, 1849 in Picton , Western Australia , † June 20, 1901 in Perth ) was an Australian explorer and explorer and the brother of John Forrest , whom he accompanied on several of his trips.

Life

After he had traveled independently in 1871 by Anthony O'Grady Lefroy (1816-1897), Charles Hunt and his brother John Forrest explored the Kimberley region, he set out in 1879 to explore the so-called Tasmanland in northern Western Australia . He went from Kingsund to the Fitzroy River , of which only the mouth was known until now, followed it upwards for 400 kilometers and then turned north-east until, after terrible exertion, the Katharinestation of the South Australian overland telegraph line was reached. He found the part of the explored area belonging to Western Australia well irrigated and suitable for the cultivation of tropical products, but especially rich in pastureland and the Fitzroy navigable 300 kilometers upwards in the rainy season . This area, which he called the Kimberley District, was quickly populated by herd owners. Forrest described his journey in his Journal of an expedition from the De Gray to Port Darwin from 1880.
