Franciszek Ksawery Branicki (* around 1730 ; † 1819 in Biała Cerkiew ) was a Polish adjutant general and grand hetman of the Polish crown . He is also known under the name Franz Xaver Graf Branicki.

Live and act

Branicki came from the noble family of Korczak de Branicki . He was a son of Peter Branicki and Melania Teresa Szembek, the castellan of Oświęcim . He began his career as a soldier in the Seven Years War , first in the Russian Imperial Army and later in the French Army. He distinguished himself in 1758 at the Battle of Zorndorf , where he commanded a squadron of Russian cavalry. He went to Petersburg in 1761 , where he was friends with Stanislaus Poniatowski , whose life he saved, and after his accession to the throne in 1764 became adjutant general and crown chief hunter.

In Poland he dueled with the writer and adventurer Giacomo Casanova in 1766 , both of whom had quarreled while trying to find a singer. Branicki was seriously wounded in the pistol duel.

Ambitious and greedy, he settled in treacherous Handel in favor of Russia and the joined in 1767 Radom Confederation on to the Bar to fight.

Although the king gave him rich Starosteien and appointed him General General of the Crown, he allied himself out of ambition with Potemkin against Stanislaus, fought the new constitution and founded the Targowica Confederation with Potocki and Rzewuski in 1792 . Hated and cursed by his compatriots, he died in Bila Tserkva near Kiev in 1819 .

The Grand Marshal of the Crown was married to Alexandra Baronesse Engelhardt , a niece of Prince Potemkin.
